OPS Positions

  • OPS Greenhouse Worker

    Position type: OPS
    Temp Part-Time
    Expected Salary:: $12 - $15 Hour depending on experience

    JOB DESCRIPTION: 

    • Hand watering and fertigation of citrus and tobacco plants
    • Safe operation of gator/golf cart for transferring racks of plants between growth rooms, grafting areas and greenhouses
    • Scout for insect pests; manually remove snowscale and mealy bugs as needed.
    • Occasional trimming of small citrus seedlings
    • Repotting citrus plants
    • Safe operation of a soil sterilizer for sterilizing potting soil
    • Planting tobacco seedlings
    • Washing citrus pots for reuse
    • Cleaning and maintaining an orderly greenhouse and plant lab work area
    • Must be able to work in varied weather conditions including heat and rain
    • Training provided for proper disposal of CTV and HLB-infected plant material.
    • Experience working with plants in a greenhouse/nursery environment preferred
    • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lb bags of soil, fertilizer and lime
    • Willingness to work an occasional weekend day for a few hours

    Hours are 8:00am-12:00am with some flexibility.

  • OPS Greenhouse/Lab Tech

    Expected Salary: $15.00 per Hour

    JOB DESCRIPTION: 

    A position in an entomology laboratory is immediately available in the Department of Entomology at the University of Florida Citrus Research and Education Center in the lab of Dr. Kirsten Pelz-Stelinski. for motivated current undergraduate or recent graduates (AA/BS), preferably with experience in biological or horticultural sciences. This can be part-time during the school year, but prefer full time availability, especially during the summer. For part time, applicants whose course schedule allows for at least three 8 hour days during class semesters are preferred. The work involves ongoing research projects pertaining to the biology and management of citrus insect pests. The position will involve greenhouse and lab components. The individual fulfilling this position is expected to assist in the maintenance of plant and insect cultures. Other responsibilities include collection of data related to research objectives, including PCR detection of insect and plant genes and maintenance of cell lines. Applicants must exhibit willingness to learn new techniques as needed. This full-time position can start immediately. The position is located at the University of Florida Citrus Research and Extension Center, Department of Entomology and Nematology, Lake Alfred, FL.
