Welcome
Modeling Short Course for Ag Professionals
October 13-14, 2026
Lake Alfred, Florida
This two-day workshop will run from approximately 8:30 a.m. to 2:25 p.m. each day, with a morning coffee break, a short working lunch, and an afternoon break. The workshop is built around HYDRUS-1D as the primary working tool. HYDRUS-1D is freely available and well suited for simulating water flow through soil profiles, root water uptake, and nutrient transport. On Day 2, participants will also receive an introduction to HYDRUS 2D/3D, with an emphasis on simulating wetting patterns associated with drip and microsprinkler irrigation.
The methods presented are crop-independent and applicable across a wide range of agricultural systems. Examples will be drawn from diverse cropping systems and soil types rather than focusing on a single crop. The workshop is designed for a mixed beginner-to-intermediate audience and will accommodate 15 participants. Each participant will work on their own laptop with HYDRUS pre-installed.
The workshop structure progresses from fundamental theory to a guided model development exercise on Day 1, followed by applied, crop-general scenarios and a bring-your-own-data (BYOD) clinic on Day 2. To maintain the compact daily schedule and adjourn by 2:25 p.m., theoretical sessions and breaks will be concise, while lunch will be structured as a 30-minute working lunch. This format allows all 10 modules and the complete learning progression to be retained while providing participants with substantial hands-on experience.
