A shared folder provides example projects, theory and slide handouts, a parameter cheat sheet (van Genuchten and Feddes values for common textures), and reference papers.

 

Day 1 — October 13, 2026  —  Theory and foundations

Welcome, objectives, participant introductions and goals

Module 1: Water flow in the vadose zone. Richards equation, soil water retention, unsaturated hydraulic conductivity, van Genuchten-Mualem parameters

10:05 am

Module 2: Solute and nutrient transport theory. Convection-dispersion, dispersivity, sorption, and first-order decay

10:55 am

Module 3: HYDRUS overview. Capabilities, 1D versus 2D/3D, interface tour, project workflow

Module 4 (hands-on): Build a first HYDRUS-1D project. Domain geometry, spatial discretization, observation nodes, time information

Module 5 (hands-on): Soil hydraulic properties, initial conditions, and boundary conditions. Run and visualize a simple infiltration and redistribution simulation

Module 6: Estimating hydraulic parameters. Rosetta pedotransfer functions, RETC, and the role of measured data; parameterizing a range of soil textures from sands to finer-textured soils

Module 7 (hands-on): Root water uptake and evapotranspiration. Feddes parameters, atmospheric boundary condition, evaporation and transpiration partitioning, an irrigated crop scenario

Module 8 (hands-on): Nutrient transport. A nitrogen and phosphorus fertigation scenario, leaching below the root zone, mass balance interpretation

Module 9: Introduction to HYDRUS 2D/3D. Drip and microsprinkler wetting patterns, emitter as a boundary, live demonstration

Module 10 (hands-on clinic): Calibration and inverse modeling overview, plus a bring-your-own-data session where participants start a model from their own site
